Solar ovens can substitute conventional stoves in poor households in developing countries. Solar cooking allows families to save on cooking fuels, helps improving air quality inside homes and contributes towards the reduction of CO2 emissions.
Sahee foundation cooperates with an experienced NGO, propagating solar cooking among poor families in the Andes. The local NGO organises courses how to build a solar oven for poor familiesin cities of the Andes. Carefully selected beneficiaries have the chance to attend a one-week course, building their own oven.
Once the solar oven is assembled and functioning, the 4-month follow-up phase starts. Each beneficiary attends regular follow-up trainings. Thanks to these trainings, users become experts in cooking and start appreciating all the advantages of solar cooking while being able to manage the difficulties. The team makes sure that all those who built their solar oven will keep using it as their main cooker.
The estimated cost of one solar oven including all trainings is 100 Euros or 150 US $.
Effects of the project:
-
More than 500 families change to solar cooking annually
- Considerable impact on the reduction of CO2 emissions per year
-
Considerable reduction of air pollution (particulate matter)
-
One solar oven can save more than 50% of the total household expenditures, allowing families to use saved funds for healthier food or to pay school fees etc.
-
Healthier way of preparing food (refining)
